Bill Merriman

Has enjoyed 30 years of coaching experience with VIU University Men's, Mid-Isle Youth and Ladies Premier League teams, Metro & Selects All-star, BC Summer Games, Inter-Provincial League and European touring teams.


Bill has received much recognition for his coaching over the years, including NDYSA Coach of the Year and BCCAA Coach of the year, also numerous provincial and national championships at the Youth and Collegiate level.


But, nothing has been as meaningful as the success of players he has coached. Many of Bill’s former players are on university, provincial and national team programs. Bill has built strong relationships with many recognized coaching associates from around the world, who welcome the opportunity to be involved in Merriman Soccer coaching programs.

Currently coming off a season with SFU men's team, and previously a starting 11 with VIU Mariners program, Chris has a passion for the game that runs deep.  He has previously been the head coach at Nanaimo's Woodlands Soccer Academy and also coached within the Nanaimo District Development Centre and Merriman's Soccer Academy. Chris has also been performing coaching duties in the Mid Isle Highlanders youth program and coaching the U21 team. 


Chris also brings playing experience on Nanaimo United Men's Division & Victoria Highlanders FC. He has played four years on the BC Provincial teams as well as four years in the Canadian National Training Centre, as well as numerous years with the U.V.I Metro team.


Soccer has taken Chris to England, Mexico and the United States numerous times as well as Ireland and Czech Republic. Chris's goals are to keep pursuing soccer at the highest level but enjoys coaching the youth in his offseason to develop players within the community to reach the next level.

Tyler brings vast experience from his time at Vancouver Island University soccer finishing 1st as the 2009 BCCAA League Champs and at the time also playing on the Nanaimo United Men's Div One team.


Tyler is currently coaching within the Merriman Soccer Programs and has coached youth for several years in training sessions and camps for VIU, Pacific Sport , Mid Isle Club and Merriman Soccer.


Tyler played for 2 years on the BC Provincial team as well as the Y-League team, played 4 years on the U.V.I. Metro team and he has played in several international tournaments including Germany, Holland, California, and Seattle. Tyler enjoys helping players to develop the skills and desire to improve their game.

Currently in his full time role with the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and Residential Program, James Merriman has spent much of his time working with his family on the island with Merriman Soccer. During that time he has worked with his father Bill Merriman, who among several roles is the current head coach of the Vancouver Island University (VIU) men’s soccer program.

Along with his recent part-time duties with Whitecaps FC, Merriman was assistant coach of the SFU men’s soccer NCAA Division II program in 2012 and 2013. Prior to that, Merriman was assistant coach at VIU from 2009 to 2011. In his time coaching collegiately, the two programs combined to win four conference titles, made two NCAA Final Four appearances, and won a CCAA national championship, compiling an overall record of 64W-11L-9D.

During his playing days, Merriman played NCAA Division I soccer at the University of Denver before going on to play with Colorado Rapids Reserves and  Victoria Highlanders FC, as well as Colorado Lightning in the Professional Arena Soccer League.
